Medicare Advantage Plans (Medicare Part C)

_Medicare Advantage Plans are also called Medicare Part C. These plans are managed by Private Insurance Companies under the regulation of Medicare and the Department of Health and Human Services.

In most plans you are required to use doctors, hospitals, and other medical providers that are part of the insurance companies network (like an HMO or PPO). If you choose a provider outside the network, you could be responsible for all or part of the costs or your service.

You usually pay a monthly premium (although there are some plans with a $0 monthly plan premium) in addition to your Part B premium. You are also usually subject to copayments and coinsurance limits for certain services or treatments.

The costs, network, coverages, and copayments are different for every plan and each specific insurance company. This is why you need to be very careful when choosing an Advantage Plan and working with a qualified independent agent that represents several different companies is a good idea.

If you would like prescription drug coverage, it is often offered through your specific plan. If not, you can join a Medicare Part D Plan with a separate policy.

When you join a Medicare Advantage Plan, you don't need a medicare supplement or medigap policy and you can not use a medigap or supplement policy to pay for expenses not covered by an Advantage plan. If you already have an Advantage Plan you can not be sold any type of Medicare supplement or Medigap plan.

Each year insurance companies evaluate the financial stability of their plans by area, and may choose to change benefit levels, copay, premiums or even stop offering a specific plan completely. During open enrollment periods, you can choose another Advantage plan or apply for coverage with a Medigap policy. It is very important to review your Advantage plan documents every year to make sure you are not stuck in the wrong plan when open enrollment ends.
